Maconnerie and lightens, finishing work (FAQ)
The most common questions
Are you repairing the masonry?
Our specialized contractor’s license allows us to carry out light non-structural repairs, but we prefer that this work be entrusted to a masonry contractor, especially when the degradation of the mortar occurs on a recurring basis.
During the caulking work, we have the opportunity to inspect almost the entire building envelope. We always take this opportunity to inform you, with photos, of all the places that need special attention.
Should mortar seals be sealed in the lightening of doors and windows?
The sill is the lower part of the wall on which the window base or door sill rests. When visible, it is usually made of stone, concrete or brick.
It is sometimes non-visible and hidden behind the coating such as aluminum, PVC or acrylic.
Depending on the width of the opening, it may have one (1) to several mortar joints. Over time, mortar degrades and can become an important source water infiltration and cause significant damage to the interior of your building, especially if the spandrel is made of brick and has several joints.
It is strongly recommended that a mason be given the repair of the joints before re-caulking. Mortar joints can also be covered with sealant to temporarily limit the risk of damage, but this solution offers no medium and long-term guarantee.
The quickest and cheapest alternative is to Cover the spandrels with aluminium at the same time as will be redoes the new caulking. It is a simple, economical and sustainable technique whose end result can easily be harmonised with the entire building. However, it is not 100% recommended because the water infiltrating can create weaknesses in the mortar and degrade it without us noticing.
Do you repair elements of the roof?
Our specialized contractor’s license does not allow us to carry out repairs on the roof and like masonry, we prefer that this work be entrusted to a roofing contractor.
However, we can include in the caulking, the repair of all the joints of the aluminum siding on the roof.
When caulking your windows, we have the opportunity to inspect almost the entire building envelope.
We always take this opportunity to point out, photos in support, of all places in need of special attention.
